Charles Francis Hall established a small seal-engraving business and in the late 1850s, two small newspapers, the Cincinnati Occasional and the Daily Press. Noted for his partnership and later parsimonious parting with seal maker Platt Evens JR and his public“patent fights” with other seal makers. Unknown until now the only example of a C.F. Hall lever seal press is this one pictured. Very similar to an Evens Press of the same size (look under Evens herein) The collection is fortunate to have the Cf Hall Court press, The C. F. Hall Percussion press and this new C.F. Hall embossed press. These C.F. Hall seals are treasures
Seal Press making, exciting as it was was not enough for Hall. At the age of 39, he left for the Arctic to search for the ill fated Franklin expedition, which had disappeared almost 15 years before. After many return trips North, never finding his quest, he died from arsenic poisoning and never returned home. These C.F. Hall seals are treasures
And C.F. Hall marched into History and books were written about him. The old best selling tome "Weird and Tragic Shores: "The story of Charles Francis Hall, Arctic explorer" |
