“Curl on Neck Lion Press “Number One and Number Two”. These smaller ornate bottom presses are much less common than the 11 inch curl on neck ornate bottom presses. Made in small numbers probably at a local foundry, these were late mid-1800 origin. The Number One pictured here looks to be repainted probably many decades ago, note the whiskers. The Number Two is a fire survivor, pitted and some surface melted/bubbled has no dies and rusted/melted center shaft. The only obvious difference is that # 2 has a thick neck/chin. However this #2 lion is only the second of its kind known to date according to the experts.Rare indeed ! The seal in number one is Duncan Ballentine, Notary Public, Andes, New York and can thereby date this seal as around 1861.
